Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is dropping next month, but we’re getting a beta before that – and there is a ton of information available about the upcoming game that might be a bit overwhelming. What can you expect from the sequel to the successful 2019 game? How can you get access to the beta? Which fan-favorite characters are returning? We’ve gathered everything we know about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 here in one place so you don’t have to look anywhere else for all the important info.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 release date is October 28, 2022. While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard launched in mid-November, it would appear that Activision is taking advantage of a leaner autumn release window to get Call of duty: Modern Warfare 2 out into the world a little earlier than anticipated.

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 pre-orders are live and so far there are two editions: the Cross-Gen bundle which gives both last-gen and current-gen versions of the game for Xbox and PlayStation players (PC players just get the base game and pre-order bonuses), and the Vault Edition.

Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer

Aside from leaks, we haven’t seen any Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer just yet. Expect it to be similar to other COD titles, with a nice variety of game modes. We’ll likely get classic modes like Team Deathmatch and Search and Destroy, but may get Gun Game and a few new modes – including the rumored DMZ mode.

We know from our multiplayer preview conversation with Infinity Ward that Modern Warfare 2’s PvP will be shaped by Warzone’s sandboxes. “We were really inspired by all the systemic, crazy gameplay that came out of that big sandbox,” says multiplayer design director Geoffrey Smith. “That really pushed us to look at all the stuff that we’re making, to give everything inputs and outputs, and hope for these happy accidents of how they interact in the world.”
Expect more ways to traverse water including swimming and new water-based vehicles that will allow for more map traversal than ever before. “We’ve always shied away from water,” says Jack O’Hara, game director. “We’ve always been like ‘let’s not do it, because we can’t do it to the quality we want.’ And this time around it was like ‘enough’s enough, we gotta do it!'”
There are also new movement mechanics, like a new ledge hang that will let you fire your weapon while hanging off a ledge, and the ability to dive forward while running to get out of harm’s way. You can also lean out of car windows to fire weapons and even mantle up onto the roof.

Modern Warfare 2 beta

Much like it did with Vanguard, Black Ops Cold War, and Modern Warfare, Activision will give players an opportunity to get their hands on the new Call of Duty installment ahead of release.

Modern Warfare 2 gameplay
Activision is promising Modern Warfare 2 will be “the most advanced experience in franchise history” – built on a brand new version of Infinity Ward’s stunning IW Engine. While the first Modern Warfare 2 trailer calls itself a “world gameplay reveal trailer,” it’s mostly comprised of cutscenes. We have seen a bit more gameplay during our hands-on preview, however, and saw a healthy chunk of a very cool mission during E3. That mission took place on a shipping barge during a storm, with containers sliding around the deck as players try to advance across it. It looks pretty wild.

From what we’ve seen, the gameplay includes a wild rappelling mission down the side of a skyscraper, a night vision mission that includes a downed Apache helicopter, and the aforementioned water-based mission that will make the most of Modern Warfare 2’s impressive visual fidelity and new water mechanics.

What is DMZ mode in Call of Duty?
Modern Warfare 2 is reportedly set to have its own Escape from Tarkov style game mode called ‘DMZ’. Insiders continue to suggest(opens in new tab) that Modern Warfare 2 DMZ has been in development since 2018, and will see players working across larger maps to acquire loot, avoid rival teams, and successfully extract from the map with their spoils. A recent leak from an NFL player hands-on(opens in new tab) shows a screen that seems to be Modern Warfare 2, with the words ‘DMZ’ emblazoned in the top right corner. Given the growing popularity of games like Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown, we’re eager to see what Call of Duty’s take on the game type will look like.
